B-Boyin’ aka Breaking
In this workshop, you will be taught the history of B-Boying’ and the mechanics of the movement, including a how to demonstration of foundation (basic fundamentals of B-Boy/Girl movements) and an introduction to power moves. The workshop is an hour and a half and limited to 15-20 students preferably in an open classroom or theater space. This workshop may include dancers at a varying level of skill. B-Boy/Girl experience is not necessary.
Creating Solo Work
In this workshop artists/students learn the creative and developmental process of solo work based on real life experiences, oral histories and autobiographical material. Topics covered include, but are not limited to:
- Creating a character
- Research and interviews
- Premise of story
- Telling your story
- Theatrical conventions and influences
- Voice
- Movement
- Writing
The workshop is an hour and a half and is limited to 10-12 students preferably in an open classroom or theatre space.
In a residency longer than one week this workshop can be extended to allow students to research, write, develop a character and perform an original monologue.
Voice Workshop
Due to the demands that solo performance has on the body and voice, this workshop is designed to help performers take care of their instrument through proper:
- Nutrition
- Eating habits
- Warm up
- Vocal rest based techniques borrowed from Fitzmaurice, Rodenburg and Yoga.
At the end of this workshop artists/student will have a personal warm-up and a better understanding of caring for and using the body/voice for performance. The workshop is an hour and a half and limited to 15-20 students preferably in an open classroom or theatre space.
Acting/Character Analysis
This workshop will teach students how to interpret a character for stage or film. Using a foundation based on the Stanislavski Technique, and influences from other masters such as Peter Brook, Michael Chekhov and Michael Shurtleff, students are taught how to lift a character from “The page to the stage,” using relaxation, concentration, given circumstances, commitment to an action, objectives, imagination, emotion and improvisation.
Ensemble Building
This workshop is designed to develop:
- Ensemble work for actors/dancers, who create original work
- Using exercises that sharpen focus
- Rhythm and timing, text, movement, and imagination.
- Drawing on the four elements of Earth/Water/Air and Fire, creating Atmosphere and using Zen influenced group awareness; the ensemble learns how to transform space using their collective body energy.
The workshop is an hour and a half and is limited to 10-15 students preferably in an open classroom or theatre space. In a longer and more intense residency, the workshop may be extended to allow ensembles to create and perform an original performance piece.
